Michael Bay Will Direct Transformers 5—Then He’s Done

In today’s least surprising news, while promoting his surprisingly gloss-free military thriller 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, explosion maestro Michael Bay confirmed to Rolling Stone he’s in the pre-production phase of the fifth Transformers instalment, which he’ll also direct.

The film is set for release in the summer of 2017, but first Bay has to finish post-production on this summer’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which we’re hoping is way more mind-blowing than 2014’s tepid TMNT reboot.

The reason this Transformers update is newsworthy is because Bay originally said he wouldn’t be helming any more of those flicks because he wanted to focus on new material. Now, he tells Rolling Stone T5 will be his final directing gig in the longstanding franchise.

To quote the director: “It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”

In addition to Bay, several key players will be involved in 2017’s Transformers, including star Mark Wahlberg, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and writers Ken Nolan, Art Marcum, and Matt Halloway.
