Check Out The First Photo Of Rogue One’s Stellar Cast
Some pretty big Star Wars news broke this weekend at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California as the cast of the first standalone movie, Rogue One, was announced—accompanied by a photo of the actors in full Star Wars wardrobe.
With a planned release of December 2016, the film has now begun shooting with stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Bloodline’s Ben Mendelsohn. The story centres on a band of resistance fighters on a mission to steal the Empire’s blueprints for the Death Star. Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards directs.
“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” producer Kathleen Kennedy explains. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.”
As if that wasn’t enough Star Wars-related news for one weekend, Disney and Lucasfilm also named their chosen director for 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX—Colin Trevorrow, the filmmaker behind the third highest-earning movie ever made, Jurassic World.
And while the start date for production on the film is still a long ways away, the newest member of the Star Wars club is already excited about the project: “This is not a job or an assignment,” says Trevorrow, “It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.”
