Orphan Black’s Special Effects Reel Shows Off Its Best Tricks
Tatiana Maslany has some pretty amazing co-stars on Orphan Black but there’s one standout you may have never noticed on screen—which is the whole point.
Orphan Black’s visual effects team Intelligent Creatures are the people behind some of the show’s most impressive scenes, including the ones where Maslany and Ari Millen play multiple characters, acting opposite themselves thanks to the magic of the team’s CG work (and a pair of top-notch acting doubles).
The company’s newly released visual effects demo reel from the show’s third season—perfectly set to The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb”—demonstrates exactly what the team brings to the show, from making the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall look as though it was set down in the centre of London, England to taking a Canadian soundstage to the middle of the Mexican desert.
Some of the clip’s highlights include Helena bidding adieu to her scorpion pal, its CG legs wriggling as she turns Orphan Black’s version of Jiminey Cricket into her “sandwich”, the scene where Rachel has the pencil Sarah put in her extracted from her eyeball, and the creepy Neolutionist-designed worm that Delphine pulls out of a dead Dr. Nealon’s mouth.
Of course, the crowning moment of every season is the finale where all four main Leda sestras get together. Last year it was a clone dance party, this year it was a dinner party with Mrs. S, Felix, Detective Bell, Scott, and Donnie in attendance.
