Praise Satan: Key And Peele Are Making A Demon-Themed Animated Movie
The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick has recruited some demonically funny collaborators for his next animated film project Wendell and Wild: comedy duo Key and Peele have signed on to develop the project alongside him.
With the movie still in the planning stages, not a lot is known about the plot at this point but here’s Selick’s amusing description: “Wendell and Wild is a comedy about two scheming demon brothers who must face their arch-nemesis, the demon-dusting nun Sister Helly, and her two acolytes, the goth teens Kat and Raoul.” Who doesn’t love a good goth teen?
Like the Tim Burton-penned Nightmare Before Christmas and Selick’s other well-known movie Coraline (based on a book by Neil Gaiman), Wendell and Wild will be stop-motion animated. Selick will co-write the script with Jordan Peele. The result will almost certainly be a funny script centered on the kinds of dark tales Selick is characteristically concerned with.
“We are who we are,” says the filmmaker, drawing up a list of works that inspire him. “Charles Addams cartoons, the original Twilight Zone series, Ray Harryhausen’s stop-mo monsters, Disney’s Night on Bald Mountain, Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers—these were the things that caught and held my attention as a kid. Used to be what I liked was a small percentage of what was being made. These days, everything is dark, darker, darkest.”
Ahead of Wendell and Wild, Keegan-Michael Key will be adding more voice work to his CV with a turn in 2016’s Angry Birds, due out next May. Check out the trailer below:
