The Best-Directed Science Fiction Movies Of All Time
If you’re one of those science fiction fans who constantly complains about the industry’s lack of respect for your favourite genre, it may be time to re-think that position. The Directors Guild of America has polled its members and compiled a list of the 80 Best-Directed Films of All-Time. The good news? Five of the top 30 movies deal with space, aliens, robots, and/or other futuristic concerns. While only one other science fiction movie made the top 80 (Alien landed at #64), fans should feel vindicated that the genre’s best ranked right up there with the giants of world cinema. According to the DGA, these are the five best-directed science fiction movies of all time. (You’ll find their ranking on the overall list in parentheses.)
5. A Clockwork Orange (27)
45 years after its release, A Clockwork Orange’s bizarre dystopian future has lost none of its power to stimulate thought, debate, and discomfort.
4. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (23)
The DGA’s list features five Steven Spielberg-directed movies, but only one of his science fiction classics made the cut.
3. Blade Runner (20)
With no fewer than four official versions in circulation, it’s not entirely clear which Blade Runner landed on the DGA’s list, but we’re guessing it’s not the compromised theatrical cut.
2. Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (19)
Much like Blade Runner, A New Hope has been subjected to regular tinkering since its premiere. While George Lucas has used modern effects to exaggerate the technical feats of the original, even the film’s earliest audiences knew they were being treated to one of the supreme achievements of science fiction filmmaking.
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (4)
It’s no exaggeration to say that none of the films on this list would have been possible without the influence of Stanley Kubrick’s mindbending masterpiece. Ditching the B movie trappings of previous sci-fi movies, he broke new ground in special effects and trusted viewers of all ages to navigate the most elusive and challenging blockbuster of all time.
